Chinese Herbal Medicine

Like all branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbal medicine is based on the principle of balance and harmony between yin (cold, dark, soothing forces) and yang (warm, bright, invigorating forces). These two forces control the way Qi (pronounced 'chi') flows in living things. (Qi is known as the energy that keeps living things alive.) Chinese herbs are classified in different ways, including yin/yang qualities, taste, and amount of Qi energy. They sometimes include mineral and animal elements.

Chinese Herbalism has developed very carefully over at least 4,000 years of meticulous study. There are approximately 300 Chinese herbs used regularly in prescriptions, and are used most often in conjunction with each other, changing as a person's condition progresses. The exact combination of herbs in a prescription is custom-tailored by a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine to meet the exact needs of an individual situation. Each herb is selected to correct an imbalance in certain parts of the body to restore the natural flow of Qi.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the most widely accepted natural healing methods used today, being used for the relief of common ailments, for the prevention of disease, for some symptoms of pregnancy, during childbirth, for health promotion, for anaesthesia, for removal of allergies, and for other purposes. It works on the basis of meridians, energetic pathways in the body through which Qi (see above) flows. Each of these meridians corresponds to an organ in the body. When an organ is out of balance, blockages and energy disruptions will form along its meridian line. This is usually accompanied by painful areas.

After a person's condition is diagnosed, points along the meridians are selected where there are disruptions in the energy flow. Fine acupuncture needles are inserted into these points, usually just below the skin, to remove blockages, stimulate weak energy, or lower extra energy. The corrected energy flow returns the balance in the corresponding organ, and natural functioning returns.

Acupuncture needles are inserted quickly and almost painlessly. They are sometimes used in conjunction with heat, in which preparations of the herb moxa (mugwort) are burned on the ends of the needles. This creates only a small amount of heat, and is not enough to hurt the skin in any way. Sterile, disposable needles are always used.

NAET (Nambutripad Allergy Elimination Technique)

NAET is a relatively new treatment, being discovered by accident within this century. It is an extremely fast and effective allergy elimination treatment, lasting only 24 hours as compared to conventional desensitization's 2-to-3-week treatment. It uses acupuncture in conjunction with exposure to the allergen, in order to keep the body's energies flowing while the allergen is still present. This causes the body to re-learn its normal reaction of trying to constrict its energies.

A very small but growing number of Traditional Chinese Medicine clinics practice this in North America.

Nesshi

Like acupuncture, Nesshi also redirects and balances the flow of energy in the body through the meridian lines. It is also useful for diagnosing and detecting the energy imbalances along these meridians. It uses localized heat and cold instead of needles. The heat is just above normal body temperature.

In Nesshi, the body is forced to resume healing itself after it has already adjusted and settled into an unacceptable state. This redirection of energy can often have dramatic effects in a person's course of healing, effects which are apparent by the end of the treatments. The healing continues long after the treatments end.

The resumption of healing can often be uncomfortable. But if the treatments are carried through, one will experience a radical change in their health, finding themselves functioning at almost perfect levels again.

The Lakelands Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Centre is one of the only Traditional Chinese Medicine clinics outside of Japan that performs this technique.
